Below is a combination of good and bad things about AutoCAD’s Search bar for help.

The Search Bar in AutoCAD’s title bar can be customized to include your own library of tips and tricks and other documents you may have accumulated.  The less than convenient limitation is you must link each file individually.

You can also add a link to an RSS Feed through the Communication Center.  The disappointing limitation is RSS Feeds are not searchable from the Search Bar in AutoCAD.

Clear the “Hide results older than..” check box.

I strongly recommend you clear the check box that hides posts older than xx days as shown in the Communication Center’s settings dialog and let the info flow.

I had a situation where a project drawing had some block definitions that needed an update.  The blocks represented mapping symbols such as a water valve, water meter, and so on.  They were defined at wrong size and on the wrong layer.  (more…)

notoobar-ribbonIn most recent version of AutoCAD when a toolbar is visible it is easy to control which toolbars are displayed.

1. Right clicking on any toolbar that is visible displays a list of toolbars for that menu group.

2. Right clicking on a blank area of the screen where you can dock a  toolbar and you get a list of all the Menu Groups. Simply pick a toolbar from within one of the menu groups listed.

All very quick and easy to do when either of those conditions exist. Now you open AutoCAD 2010 set to the 2D Drafting and Annotation workspace. No toolbars are open and no dockable areas are visible to right click on.  Now what do you do? (more…)

National CAD Standard is a vital component of the National BIM Standard November 11, 2009

US National CAD StandardAs the National Building Information Model Standard (NBIMS) takes shape the National CAD Standard (NCS) has been included in the discussion. NCS plays an important role in the BIM process.

Simply stated, the NCS addresses paper-centric drafting as a means of producing design and construction drawings. NBIMS sets standards for typical processes and computer-based exchanges of information employed during the conception, creation, and operation of facilities. Since design and construction drawings, as well as computer-based virtual building models, are a typical product of building information modeling techniques, NCS will continue to be important as a standard for design and construction drawing output from the BIM process.

Add a CD Label to your Sheet Sets August 15, 2009

Often your electronic submittal is delivered on a CD or DVD.  The jewel case label specifications often include the

  • Project Number
  • File Name,
  • Company Name,
  • Contact Name,
  • Phone Number

2009-08-15_094406

This information is the same used in fields in the title blocks of your sheet set. Add a 4″x4″ (jewel case inset size) layout to your sheet set and it can be configured to show the required info for your CD label. Get a little more creative and you could design an 8″x8″ foldable inset for the jewel case and include a project description, info about your company (market yourself whenever you have the opportunity), or other metadata for the project.
